But now it appears that the time you select for a tough workout is important in determining its effectiveness.
Experts say that people who go to the fitness center – or for a jog – after job are likely to achieve a higher level of fitness than those who else workout very first thing in the morning.
These people found that the human body’s metabolism seems to adapt far better to a keep-fit schedule in the evening or night-time.
In research at the Clinical Research Centre of the University of Chicago, 40 healthy men from ages between 20 and 30 were divided into 5 groups.
4 teams worked out strenuously for an hr on a step machine in the morning, afternoon, evening or night, while the 5th did not workout at all.
Blood samples taken from all the volunteers showed that levels of 2 endocrine hormones – cortisol and thyrotropin – higher far more in individuals who worked out either in the evening or late at night. Researchers also found that glucose levels reduced far more in the same subjects.
Head researcher Doctor Orfeu Buxton said: ‘These are indications that your metabolism is having very well to routine workouts and recommends it may be far better to train after function rather than very first thing in the morning.’
The final results could explain why sportsmen were able to perform much better at peak times of the day.
Dr Buxton, who will present his research at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in Denver, Colorado, tomorrow, went on: ‘This is the 1st research to look at the change in the effects of workout at 4 different times of day.
‘We didn’t expect to notice such big differences. The variations in the hormone levels are very large.’
John Trower, a technical director at UK Athletics, who teaches javelin star Steve Backley, said best sportsmen normally did the technical perform in the morning and the ‘hard graft’ between 4pm and 6pm.
But in his practical experience, not individuals were best for workouts in the evening. ‘Some are morning individuals and others might have more energy in the evening. It’s a own choice.’
